The annual convention will be highlighted by two magic and illusion shows.
The Winter Carnival of Magic, sponsored by Ring 58, the East Tennessee chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, attracts magicians from as far away as Florida, New York and California. Ring 58 is made up of area magicians.
"There will be exciting cabaret performances, stage performances and lectures from internationally known performers for the registrants," said Michael Messing, co-chairman of the event. "In addition, there will be contests for stage performance and close-up performance and 9 magic dealers will be displaying and selling their products."
For the general public, there will be a different stage show March 2 and 3. Friday night's performance will feature five magicians, including Shoot Ogawa and Jay Mattioli.
"Shoot, who's originally from Japan, has won first place in the Japan Grand Prix, the MacMillan International Magic Convention in Great Britain and the Magic Masters Open Tournament," Messing said. "Only 25 years old, Jay is one of the few performers ever to win first place in the stage competition at the International Brotherhood of Magicians International Convention and the Society of American Magicians National Convention."
The Saturday evening performance will feature John Carney. One of the top sleight-of-hand artists in the world, Carney has been featured in casinos in Atlantic, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. He has also been named Magician of the Year more times than anyone at Hollywood's famed The Magic Castle and is the only magician to have won in all four of the Castle's categories.
"On top of that, we'll have one of the funniest magic acts in the world," Messing said. "Kolh and Company has performed with the Smothers Brothers, Randy Travis, Mickey Rooney, Jeff Foxworthy, Gallagher and Rich Little," Messing said.
Reserved seat tickets for the public shows are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 10. They are available at the Country Tonite or by calling 453-2003.
